Message from the Moffitt Memorial Ride Director

Bob Niedenthal - 12/3/2022

2023 Moffitt Adventure Ride

In 2014 Dr. Tom Moffitt, OTET Board President, invited a group of friends to attempt to ride the Ohio to Erie Trail. At the time there was no complete map of the trail and we were actually scouting how to connect the various trails and traverse the larger cities. In 2015 a slightly larger group led by Dr. Moffitt rode the trail again proving that there was a continuous, viable route.

The goals that Dr. Tom Moffitt was pursuing in 2016 when the OTET organization began offering a fully supported Trail Ride was to get the word out about the existence of the Ohio to Erie Trail and for riders to have a way to experience the Trail through an organized, weeklong ride. In the past six years the OTET has become one of the premier cross-state bike trails and there are a myriad of tour companies that offer supported rides on the Trail. At this point in time the OTET organization believes it has accomplished Dr. Moffitt’s goals. Since the organization is not structured as a sustainable touring business we have made the difficult decision to stop offering the fully supported Moffitt Memorial Ride.

In a nod to the early Adventure Rides organized by Dr. Moffitt, a group of OTET Board members and friends are planning to ride the OTET during 9-15 September 2023. This will be a non-commercial, unsupported ride. There are no fees and every rider is responsible for their own logistics planning. We will follow the itinerary of Covington, Xenia, Columbus, Mount Vernon, Millersburg, Massillon, Akron, and Cleveland. The core group includes: Mike Groeber, Tom Alexander, Sandy Sanders, Ron Overly, and Bob Niedenthal. Anyone who wants to join us on this 2023 Moffitt Adventure Ride is welcome to ride along; you just need to show up in Covington on Saturday morning 9 September.

Thank you for all your support, fond memories, and we’ll see you on the Trail.

In Memoriam: Gene Pass

Alan Knowles - 10/20/2022

Gene Pass
June 12, 1933—September 27, 2022

If you ever rode the Ohio to Erie Trail (OTET) through London, it is very possible that you either saw or met Gene Pass.  Gene knew no strangers. Although he was a quiet person, he liked talking to riders and walkers and loved listening to their stories. He would follow their blogs and Facebook pages for months, with true interest.

Gene was one of the founding board members of the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails (FMCPT), the support group for the Madison County trail section of the OTET. He was one of our most prolific members. If you ever found a flier promoting one of our rides on your windshield when you parked at our trailheads, it was probably put there by him. It was Gene’s idea:  he printed them at home (very computer adept for his age) and then distributed them. He cleared brush on the trail, worked many hours soliciting and tracking memberships, worked on all our rides and events, and so much more. Gene rarely made a suggestion without also volunteering his sweat equity to make it happen. He was a prolific photographer and always had photos to show the local park board what was happening or who was riding on the trail, thus ensuring that park board members knew or were reminded of the importance of the trail for our community’s health and wellbeing.

Gene also loved to ride; one year riding 7000 miles.  Gene never turned down a chance to ride with someone. One January day I noticed the weather was going to be sunny, 35 degrees, and a steady SW wind. I called Gene and asked, “Do you want to ride a 20 mph tail wind home from Xenia tomorrow?” He, of course, said sure. I told him I’d call him back when I work out the logistics to transport us to Xenia. Instantly he said. “No problem. My wife will drop us off.” So Gene (nearly 80 years old at the time), Wayne Roberts (the other half of our eastern trail namesake Roberts Pass), and I sailed home from Xenia dodging snow drifts and ice patches. He also liked McDonalds and combined two of his loves by riding the McDonald’s Century. He visited McDonald’s six times riding through London, Xenia, and Jamestown on that 100 mile long ride.

FMCPT wasn’t the only benefactor of Gene’s energy. He donated countless volunteer hours to the Boy Scouts, his church, the historical society, and other entities. He winter camped with the Boy Scouts and hiked the Grand Canyon.  Every Friday morning he led a group of men who maintained their church. He volunteered at the historical society making rope and teaching both adults and youth about different displays.

Gene was good at recruiting. He always brought someone along to help at work events. Even as quiet as he was, it was hard to say no to him because he set such a good example.

Gene’s final wish was to have the 1.8 mile gap of the OTET trail in London to be completed along the existing rail bed. The FMCPT board will do everything in their power to honor this wish.

Albert Einstein wrote that “Life is like riding a bicycle – in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.”  Gene Pass rode the trail through the summer of 2022, but succumbed to leukemia at age 89.

Celebrating the Beechmont Connector project

Bob Niedenthal, Wade Johnston - 10/12/2022

Wednesday, 21 September, marked the official opening of the long-awaited Beechmont Bridge Connector that links the Little Miami Scenic Trail to the Lunken Airport Trail, Otto Armleder Park Trail, and Ohio River Trail in southwest Ohio. This critical trail link in USBR 21 eliminates a 5.5-mile segment of city streets and US highways. This challenging section of high speed, high traffic roads was considered by most riders the least appealing part of the 320-mile route of USBR 21 that follows Ohio SBR 1, more commonly known as the Ohio to Erie Trail, from the Lunken Airport in Cincinnati to the shore of Lake Erie in Cleveland. This section of USBR 21 is now over 90% independent, designated bike trails.

USBR 21 which traverses the State of Ohio travels through 50 miles of the Little Miami State Park; along 70 miles of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath, including 27 miles through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park; over the Bridge of Dreams, the longest pedestrian covered bridge in the US; along the Holmes County Trail, the only dual purpose recreational trail and horse & buggy path in the US; and into Cleveland where the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is less than 1.5 miles from the bike route.

"The $9.0 millon Beechmont Connector project by ODOT, Great Parks of Hamilton County and OKI Regional Council of Governments shows the level of commitment that the Greater Cincinnati area has in developing a safe and robust cycling infrastructure." Bob Niedenthal, Ohio to Erie Trail Board Member.

President Groeber, our master adjuster

Lisa Daris - 12/17/2022

Mike Groeber has never met a cyclist he didn’t like. If you happen to meet Mike and you’re on a bicycle, he’ll show you hospitality that you’ll write home about. He’ll tune-up your bike for you. He’ll feed you. He’ll track down hard to find panniers for you. He’ll give you a map and make sure you know how to get where you are going. And before you saddle up, he’ll hand you an Ohio to Erie sticker too. The Ohio to Erie Trail won’t be the same without Mike Groeber as its leader.

He started serious bike riding in 1968, was elected VP of Springfield Cycling Club in 1971 and has been an official member of the cycling advocacy community ever since. Mike has lots of tales from his many years of racing, club riding, and touring, and about his cycling buddy “FM”, but the story I like best is the one of how he met Connie, his wife. He met her on a full moon ride in Yellow Springs that he and his buddy FM organized for their local cycling club. Romance bloomed in an unlikely place - under the golden arches at the McDonald’s in Xenia, where he and Connie started talking. Since then, they have ridden together on tours in more than 20 states. Mike holds claim to HUNDREDS of bike tours throughout the years.

Mike is likely the most talented professional bike fitter in the state of Ohio. In his fully equipped fitting studio, he has a knack for looking at your posture and adjusting everything ever-so-slightly, right down to where the cleats hit your pedals to give you the perfect fit. His accuracy is sharp, and service is bar-none.

Mike’s recognizable red mobile bike shop trailer has been seen at most every supported ride between Springfield, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and beyond. It’s full of tools or accessories that any cyclist could want or need, and riders flock to it while touring to make a quick purchase of an item they forgot, or to use one of the multiple air pumps, courtesy of Mike and his long-running business, Bicycle Revival.

Mike is stepping down as the chair of the OTET board at the end of 2022 after eight years as a board member and four years as President. It was an honor to work with Mike. He’ll still be cycling the trails so keep an eye out for him and Connie as they track some miles with smiles in the upcoming years.

This past summer, he toured Yellow Springs with his five grand kids on “Big Green”, a triple-seater bike.  "How Cool!" was exclaimed by Local resident and comedian Dave Chappelle when he noticed them riding along!

If you're in the Yellow Springs area, keep an eye out for Mr. and Mrs. Claus on “Big Green” during the holiday season!
